All Hail, Our Robotic Friends!

The robots are coming… Are we ready? As mythology and technology collide the robots from our dreams are materializing into reality. The opportunities for robotics to improve our lives are abundant across sectors: reduction of menial labor & waste; environmental cleanup & restoration; improvement healthcare & social services; revolutions in entertainment & transportation. But what is at stake as our relationship with robots evolves? As we boldly step into this new frontier do we risk losing something that makes us special? Or can the technology we create help bring out the best of our humanity?

Join the MindshareLA community for an eclectic evening featuring talks by visionary pioneers exploring the world of robotics. In addition to the talks there will be the usual well-stocked bar, delicious food, delightful performances, and enlightened debauchery for which MindshareLA is known.

PRESENTERS INCLUDE

Andrew Mcgregor utilizes robotics in humanitarian, artistic, and cultural projects. He is the head of the Oomvelt research project developing wearable technology to enable animals to communicate to humans when they smell a landmine in addition to developing educational programs for LA schools to teach students how to use technology to facilitate interspecies communication. Every year he curates a robot-themed art show featuring 70+ artists at The Hive Gallery in DTLA. He co-created the interactive sculpture ‘Teenage Meadow’ that combines plants and robotics. He is also a writer and director who utilizes science fiction filmmaking to encourage new solutions to humanitarian problems. His latest movie ‘Where the Robot Things Are’ is about to start a global festival run.

Heather Knight is a computer science professor at Oregon State University. Her research interests include human-robot interaction, non-verbal machine communications and non-anthropomorphic social robots. She directs the CHARISMA* Research Lab, whose goal is to operationalize methods from the performing arts to make more charismatic robots. *Collaborative Humans and Robots: Interaction, Sociability, Machine Learning, and Art.

Kuan Ju Wu is interested in creating delightful interactions between humans, machines, and environments. He builds kinetic construction kits and tangible interfaces that borrow facets from the shapes and movements of nature, from the stories about the future machines, and the perceptual memories from our early childhood, those intuitive, rich and satisfying experiences.

Natura Machina: Teenage Meadow symbiotically combines plants and robotics in a harmonious relationship as part of a long-term goal of creating art that is simultaneously a new life form that can exist in nature.

Dr Morie’s has 30 years of researching & creating meaningful VR experiences, combining multi-sensory, perceptual techniques for VR that predictably elicit emotional responses from participants. Her company All These Worlds, LLC is active in social VR, Mindfulness, storytelling & stress relief applications. In 2016 she concluded a project for NASA called ANSIBLE, a full virtual world ecosystem designed to provide psychological benefits for future astronauts who will undertake extremely long isolated missions to Mars. She also investigates the use of avatars—both digital and robotic—for how affect our human selves. She is currently a senior advisor to the XPRIZE’s ANA Avatar Prize challenges teams to create a robotic avatar that people can inhabit from a distance.

A variety of films from the annual Robot Film Festival will be screened at the event. The Robot Film Festival is an annual celebration of robots on screen and in performance.

ARTISTS & PERFORMERs INCLUDE

A prolific member of the underground music & art scene in downtown Los Angeles, Rome da Luce is an award-winning singer-songwriter, abstract expressionist painter, and photographer. With a collection of independently-released albums, EPs, and singles Rome has performed both as a solo artist and as a frontman extensively across the US, in Europe, Asia, and Central America in various venues and festivals including Burning Man, Lightning In A Bottle, and Shadows of Light.

The Mischievians are a misfit band of tribal elf characters, boasting bold body paint, flowers in their hair and a dangerous twinkle in their eyes. They are true mischief catalysts whose mission is pure play. The Mischievians work consciously to cultivate co-creative spaces, across the festival landscape, where tribal communal expression is encouraged, fostered and inspired.

Jasmine Ejan an Oxnard native, hopes to empower, inspire and uplift the world through art. From ballets to Bollywood films, to jumping out of a tiger cage in a magic show to running away with the circus, this Filipina-Chinese-American’s favorite credits include: Celine Dion’s A New Day, Broadway National and China tour of “Cathy Rigby is Peter Pan” as Tiger Lily, Elton John, World Music Awards, City Ballet Los Angeles, Lyric Opera, Las Vegas Contemporary Dance, Dream World Cirque. Over 25 regional musicals (Avenue Q is another favorite!) commercials, promos, art installations, Kimmel, Oprah, Conan, Tonight Show, Young and the Restless, Bold & the Beautiful, American Horror Story. She roller skates in Debbie Allen’s Hot Chocolate Nutcracker as a roller skating snow bunny, commercials, music videos (Macy’s, Facebook, Nike, Tyga, Kiiara). Creator of Blowpaste.
